Trip report: Tanzania 2007 safari
Trip report: Tanzania 2007 safari
We have now posted images from our Tanzania safari in the Photo section. This was our first trip to the famous Serengeti (“endless plains” in Swahili), and fortunately we were there at the height of the Great Migration, right around calving season when the million+ Wildebeest give birth in near unison over a few week period. We also had a first on this safari.... four of them in fact.....
Long and winding road... Ostrich farms, Tsetse Flies and a single dusty Elephant
A trip to Tanzania from Asia is not for the impatient... it took 24 hours and stops in Dubai, Nairobi and Kilimanjaro before we finally arrived at Arusha... which in reality still wasn’t where we wanted to be! Arusha is the safari capital of Tanzania, but not because of an abundance of wild game but rather because safari companies are based there and many safari guides live there when not in the bush. That said, after our long trip to Arusha, we were quite happy for the comforts of the Arusha Coffee Lodge. After a warm shower, a glass of wine and a hearty meal from an extensive menu, then settling back in a comfortable bed, we were feeling quite civilized again.
The next morning we were eager to get on with our safari – first stop the Tarangire National Park. Famed for massive herds of elephants and plains game (and attendant predators!) during the dry season, February was part of the wet season so our expectations were different. After some improvising to get around a bridge that had been washed away by months of unusually heavy rain, we arrived at Nomad Tarangire Camp, a brand new camp that we were curious to see.
