Article: Zim-Zam 2005 safari
After 2 African safaris in relatively quick succession (Botswana in Jan 2004 and South Africa in Jul 2004) we felt that we were ready for something different, a bit more... extreme!
We loved the privacy and authenticity of Botswana but wanted to try an alternative to the usual Land Rover-based game viewing. We decided to go on safari to Zambia and Zimbabwe, specifically Mosi-oa-tunya National Park in Zambia, and the Hwange and Mana Pools National Parks in Zimbabwe.
On this unique safari we were able to experience:
•the awesome power of Victoria Falls from within the swirling waters of the Devil’s Pool, just feet (and sometimes inches) from the very edge of the Falls
•a large herd of Elephant just feet away from us... once with only logs separating us from them... other times with nothing but shallow water or a few feet of grass separating us
•canoeing 60+km down the Hippo and Croc-infested Zambezi River and camping along the banks in the evening, and
•tracking Lion on foot and getting within 10 meters of 2 males
This safari also marked another milestone for us: our first published photos. We collaborated with a fellow wildlife enthusiast, Alfredo Tadiar, who wrote a 9-page article to which we contributed 30 photos. To view the article, please click here.
We have posted a more complete selection of photos from this safari in our Zim-Zam 2005 gallery. Also, our long-time friends – Alfredo and Gino Tadiar, highly regarded graphic artist and editor, respectively – published a special widescreen edition DVD of this safari, available here.
By the way, can you count 3 Elephant trunks in the picture above?
